Buying a Pre-Owned Luxury Bag: Checks to Make Before Paying

A Monogram canvas already patinated, a Timeless in supple leather, a model no longer available in boutiques: a pre-owned luxury bag is often a real crush. And just before paying, a little voice asks: can I trust it? A few simple checks are enough to buy with peace of mind. Here are the ten points to review, with us and elsewhere.

The 10 checks to make before paying

1. An invoice

This is the foundation. The invoice proves that you bought the piece from an identified seller, at a given price. It will serve you in the event of a return, a dispute, and the day you want to resell it. At Panorama, every item sold comes with an invoice.

2. A certificate of authenticity

For a bag or a small leather goods item, ask for a certificate of authenticity. It is the seller's written commitment to the piece, and a document that also matters the day you want to resell it. At Panorama, all leather goods are delivered with their own.

3. Photos of the worn areas

A beautiful photo from the front is not enough. What tells the true life of a bag are the corners, the handles, the base, the interior, the zipper and the hardware. Ask for them in close-up. On our product pages, notable defects are photographed, and we send other photos upon request.

4. Markings and codes in photos

A bag from a major house bears markings and, depending on the era, a code. You do not need to know how to read them: it is up to the seller to check them and commit in writing. But ask to see them in photos. A serious seller will show them without hesitation. Before your purchase, we can send you the codes, the stitching and the hardware of any bag.

5. An accurate description of the condition

"Good condition", alone, does not mean much. A good description names each mark and says where it is: leather patina, rubbed corners, stained lining, worn plating. It also specifies what is provided or missing: padlock, keys, shoulder strap. The grade summarizes the whole, but it is the detail that allows you to decide.

6. Clear return conditions

Read them before paying, not after. When you buy remotely from a professional, you have at least 14 days after receipt to change your mind (economie.gouv.fr). At Panorama, returns are free in France within 14 days, with a prepaid label, for an item in its original condition and with the PANORAMA seal intact.

7. The possibility to see the piece

Nothing replaces the bag in your hands: the suppleness of the leather, the actual size on the shoulder, the color under real light. With us, an item spotted on the site can be set aside with a simple WhatsApp message, to come and see it at 7 rue Baour-Lormian, a few minutes walk from the Place du Capitole. The boutique is open on Mondays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and from Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

8. Tracked delivery

A valuable bag travels with a tracking number. At Panorama, it is sent to you by email upon shipment, with Chronopost, La Poste or UPS. In France, allow 1 to 5 business days for an item in stock, and delivery is free from €200 of purchase. In-store pickup is free.

9. Secure payment

Pay on a secure payment page and keep a record of the transaction. On our site, you pay by credit card, PayPal or Apple Pay, and the payment data is exchanged in an encrypted manner by our service providers.

10. A price consistent with the condition

The price of a pre-owned bag depends on its model, its size, its material and its condition. Compare with other listings of the same model: a price far below always deserves a question. To give you a benchmark, at Panorama, most of our vintage Speedy in Monogram canvas are listed between €650 and €730. And when a bag has a marked defect, the product page says so: the price is adjusted to the condition, defect named and photographed.

Understanding Panorama grades

On every product page of our Leather Goods page, the condition of the bag is summarized by a grade. The two you will encounter most often:

  • B+: very good condition. You have to look for the traces: light patina, nothing that jumps out.
  • B: good condition. You can see that the piece has lived, but it remains beautiful: normal wear, no defects.

The other grades are explained in the grade guide, accessible from every product page. In case of hesitation between two grades, we choose the lower one. In all cases, read the description that accompanies the grade: every point of wear is named there, and the most visible are photographed. A honey patina on natural leather is normal on a vintage piece. What matters are the cracks and the through-wear, and our product pages specify it.

How Panorama checks its bags

Our rule is simple: no piece is put up for sale without having been checked, and if a doubt remains at any stage, the piece is not sold.

First check, upon receipt. Every bag is examined from all angles. A piece that does not pass this first filter is refused and never joins our stock.

Second check, before putting it up for sale. Before being photographed and published, the bag is fully re-examined. The materials, the stitching, the hardware, the markings and the codes are scrutinized, and we check that they are consistent with the model and the era.

This requirement comes from practice: our team handles Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Céline, Dior or Hermès pieces every day. Every bag leaves with its invoice and its certificate of authenticity. Our entire process is detailed on the Authentication page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the certificate of authenticity provided with all items?

It accompanies all leather goods, bags and small leather goods. Sneakers and clothing are checked before shipment and delivered with an invoice.

Can I see a bag before buying it?

Yes. Write to us on WhatsApp: we set the piece aside so you can come and see it in the boutique, or we send you detailed photos.

What does the B+ grade mean?

Very good condition: you have to look for the traces. Every mark is listed on the product page, and the most visible are photographed.

Can I return a bag bought online?

Yes, within 14 days after receipt, free in France, if the piece is in its original condition with the PANORAMA seal intact. The procedure is on the Delivery and returns page.
